About this deal

At this price point, however, there are some compromises. The lone blade features a hybrid straight and serrated edge made of mid-grade steel, which will require regular sharpening depending on your use. The straight portion is easily reconditioned, but sharpening serrations requires special techniques. Further, that blade is significantly shorter than it needs to be. There is almost a half inch of extra space in the handle that Leatherman conspicuously does not utilize. Overall, you get far more than you pay for with the Leatherman Wingman, including some truly unique features not seen in even high-end models. If you're willing to spend a little more, the Leatherman Skeletool CX offers better ergonomics but fewer functions. If you use a multi-tool for basic tasks but are prone to losing it, the Wingman won't hurt quite as much to replace.

I am a product design engineer by trade, so this stuff is what I do. I also get access to amazing 3D tools such as Solid Edge and Keyshot. I’d give a special nod to two other tools here. First, the spring-action scissors. It may seem a bit redundant to add another cutting surface into the mix, but for all the glory of MagnaCut, sometimes basic scissors are the best tool for the job. Second, the impact surface. This sits on the bottom of the Arc — a hard, flat, steel surface that’s ideal for basic hammering tasks. I used it to hammer in stakes; it’s a nice touch. Leatherman is well known for the quality and durability of their individual tools. Our experience with the Free P4 has shown that they’ve kept this dedication to quality while upgrading the overall experience. This is rev 7 of my holster design. Each revision is 3D printed on a FDM machine to test fit and work out any issues.

Recently, fellow IFMGA mountain guide Jeff Dobronyi joined the review team. Jeff's busy outdoor lifestyle requires having the right tool for the job, whether that's repairing ski gear or mountain bike components in the field or doing repairs, or slicing food at home. Every feature of FREE is accessible on the outside, allowing you to easily open tools with one hand. When put to work, the FREE works like the Leathermans of old. A 420HC serrated/plain combo knife cuts swiftly. Phillips and flathead implements drive screws as expected. The FREE P2 I tested also sports mainstays like a can and bottle opener, metal file, awl, scissors, and mini pry bar.Using the images, along with measurements using calipers, I created a very detailed 3D model of tool. I tried to spare no detail on this one. Bit Driver– One of the design compromises Leatherman made with the P4 was removing the bit driver found on the Wave+ and Surge. This wasn’t an incredibly popular decision among heavy-duty users, so Leatherman also created a fix. Once it was ‘broken in’ they didn’t want Leatherman resetting it to factory tolerances. With this in mind Leatherman designed the Free P4 with a revolutionary magnetic architecture.

Different Colors– As of right now the Free P4 is only available in stainless steel. It’s likely Leatherman will offer more color options as they work out any kinks in the Free series manufacturing process. A multi-tool that optimizes ergonomics and portability by reducing the tool set to the most important ones for daily use and carry But the FREE is unlike any other multitool I’ve used — certainly unlike any Leatherman. Although it looks like the iconic Leatherman (stainless steel shine and trademark pliers-centric construction), it carries in its guts years of engineering research, testing, and ground-up redesigns. The few tools it includes — an upgraded steel blade, good pliers, screwdrivers, and a bottle opener — are the most often used, and this tool gets these right. But that's it; if you're seeking all the tools possible, you'll be let down with this stripped-down modal. Of the remaining tools, though, our biggest complaint is with the bit driver. With the Skeletool CX, even more than with other models, Leatherman could have easily included a standard 1/4" bit driver. Still, we have tested this model for over three years, and it has slowly grown on us. Thus, the Skeletool is our top recommendation for a portable, daily multi-tool to leave clipped on your person at all times. As I noted above, the FREE carries with it a novelty that’s hard to resist playing with. While it’s not as dramatic (or menacing) as a butterfly knife, the one-handed action is unlike any other multi I’ve used. The Free P4 is manufactured in the USA from Stainless Steel with a hardened 420HC Stainless Steel blade. It offers a superb combination of 21 tools and is an ideal if not essential piece of equipment for almost any job or adventure. Tools But while Leatherman boasts a faithful following of both experienced tradespeople and weekend warriors, its latest multitool caters to a more discerning audience. The 20-tool Arc marks the brand’s most expensive — and arguably advanced — EDC ever. Not only does it boast more implements than almost any other Leatherman (the Surge edges it out by one), but it’s also the first production multi from Leatherman to carry a MagnaCut blade, the current darling steel of the knife industry. You may notice the P4 looks odd in the image, that is because there are four orientations on top of each other.
