About this deal

Those world be my 3 picks, maybe also an easier tactics book before Polgar, not that it’s hard, but maybe it’s too much for a total beginner. This is a great instructional technique as the student sees firsthand with positions they've gained familiarity with earlier that any given chess position will have multiple themes in it. After Chapter One, “The Game Explained,” readers are taught the “Aim of the Game” (ch 2) and “Tactics and Strategy” (ch 3). I suspect, however, that the particular affection felt for it by former Soviets may have another source. Though this book does begin with the basic rules of chess--and even teaches the reader how to read the book because it takes the time to explain algebraic chess notation right at the start--it quickly moves on to more advanced tactical and strategic ideas.

The breakneck pace of the book and the complex examples preclude me from thinking it appropriate for the beginner. The author presents the material in an engaging and concise manner and includes practical examples after the theory, and exams at the end of each chapter.I really liked the simple language used in this book , and a lot and lot of the innumerable chess themes and every fundamentals are covered with great detail and instructive examples. The translation by John Sugden reads well, and – as one expects from Quality Chess – the production values are high. Take, for instance, this ‘ancient puzzle’ (72) used to illustrate the restriction of piece mobility. For example, simple tactics like pins and forks are easy enough for even absolute beginners to understand. Os exercícios também são muito difíceis desde o início, mas não são impossíveis, e ajudam muito a melhorar o cálculo.

Far be it from me to want anything to do with the Soviet Union, but even I have to admit, this is one of the finest tools to quickly advance your chess game if you're an advanced beginner or intermediate player. Lasker wrote the forward to the original Russian edition and the famous coach and author Mark Dvoretsky has written the new one for this English translation, it's his favorite chessbook of all time. Following some of the sidelines might be a bit much if you’re really just starting out, but apart from that it’s very approachable and covers a lot of fundamental ideas. If his name is recognized at all, it is as a co-author of the classic Pawn Endings with Yuri Averbakh, although in truth Maizelis was its primary author. Each chapter concludes with a whimsical set of “Entertainment Pages,” where miniatures and ‘fun exercises’ appear, and some of the original drawings are brought over from the Russian. Alekhine’s “my best games of chess” is a good start because games and notes are very clear and thorough. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The Soviet Chess Primer is a modern English translation of Maizelis’s witty introduction to the royal game. The Soviet Chess Primer is a modern English translation of Maizelis's witty introduction to the royal game. If you are absolutely new to chess or under 1300 rating this may be a little advanced for you in which case I would recommend one of these three classic primers first: Siegbert Tarrasch's 'Game of Chess', Capablanca's 'Chess Fundamentals' or Lasker's 'Manual of Chess'.Please contact us in advance for advice on best procedure, as in certain circumstances we are able to send our courier to collect items. However, readers who already have some familiarity with the game will benefit a lot from its discussions of ideas which are fairly simple to understand but often difficult to apply in real games. Closer scrutiny of The Soviet Chess Primer, however, leads me to question the title chosen by Quality Chess for this new translation. All about the game of chess, including discussions on professional tournaments, game analysis and theory. Well it’s not a game collection but one book I think would be fantastic for starting out is Susan Polgar “Chess Tactics for Champions”, though it’s perhaps more intermediate than beginner.

Such high regard may be surprising for an American audience, for whom Ilya Maizelis is something of a mystery.Ultimately, I'd recommend this for the serious beginner or early-intermediate chess player looking to deepen his or her knowledge of the game. If you have a national chess federation ELO rating of 1300-1599 I highly recommend this fantastic book.
